What The Angel of the Water learned from the Chouette d’Or
Thirty-one years of hunting, thousands of seekers, a statuette found in 2024. That story taught us more than any book.
The Chouette d’Or (the Golden Owl) is the greatest French treasure hunt. Launched in 1993, it only reached its end in 2024, after its author’s death in 2009. Those who searched for it, the chouetteurs, form a community we respect: they held on for thirty-one years. We did not want to redo the Chouette. We wanted to learn its lessons.
First lesson: the author may disappear, the hunt must not depend on him
The commitment to the solutions is engraved on the Bitcoin chain before the start. The rules are public. A custodian keeps what is needed for everything to go on, and a keeper of the riddles, whose name stays sealed, keeps what allows them to be published as a fallback. If the author is no longer there, the riddles are still published, the chests still open.
Second lesson: a solution must not be open to dispute
In the Chouette, the question “is this the right answer?” depended on a person. Here it depends on a calculation: the key that opens the chest is the proof, and anyone can redo it. Before publication, every riddle is reread so that only one answer is possible.
Third lesson: the treasure must be verifiable at every moment
For years, people wondered whether the Chouette still existed and what it was worth. Here, every chest is a bitcoin address anyone can look at, with its balance, at any hour. Nothing is buried.
Fourth lesson: the organiser must not be able to change anything in silence
The author’s messages are signed; a free program, GodGift Core, verifies them on your machine. The author cannot change a rule, a date or a solution without it showing.
Fifth lesson: a treasure that lasts must grow, not run dry
The Chouette held on through the passion of its seekers. Here, the closed chests receive every quarter a share of the sales of the book’s digital edition, and bitcoin moves with time. We do not promise it will rise; we only say the treasure is not frozen.
What we keep from the Chouette
The taste for the long game, the joy of searching together, and the idea that a hunt is also a story. This one is in a novel, which accompanies the hunt without being part of it: it contains no riddle, and buying it gives no advantage.
One difference, finally, that we stand by: the Chouette was sought with a shovel, this one is sought with a key. No travel, no ground, no private property disturbed. The treasure is everywhere there is a connection, and nowhere in particular.
Everything is verifiable. Nothing is promised.
The full rules are in the terms and conditions; the frequently asked questions answer the rest.
